Approach and Philosophy

I am very interested in the Classics, and bring elements of my education and my reflections into my artwork. Because of this, I appreciate the Humanists' approach to making art, and hope that my own knowledge of Classical art influences my work in many of the same ways.
I began rowing when I was a freshman in college, and the sport captivated me both in terms of its visual beauty and the challenge which it presented. There are several paintings toward the bottom of this page which depict my experiences and which seek to capture that feeling -- out in the elements at dawn.
Light is very important to my paintings, as I feel that capturing the light at the right time of day is one of the most difficult and rewarding (if done successfully) experiences for the painter.
I love to travel, and many of my drawings and paintings depict foreign subject matter from trips that I've taken.

This year I will be adding to my European landscapes, figure studies and rowing paintings as I will be studying at King's College London.

"One would sometimes think, from the speech of young men, that things had changed recently, and that indifference was now the virtue to be cultivated. I have never heard anyone profess indifference to a boat race. Why should you row a boat race? Why endure long months of pain in preparation of a fierce half-hour, or even six minutes, that will leave you all but dead? Does anyone ask the question? Is there anyone who would not go through all its costs, and more, for the moment when anguish breaks into triumph, --or even for the glory of having nobly lost? Is life less than a boat race? If a man will give all the blood in his body to win the one, will he not spend all the might of his soul to prevail in the other?"
